Playing safely and getting help

Gambling should be entertainment. If it is not, or if you are worried about someone else, these resources can help.

GAMSTOP

GAMSTOP is the UK’s free self-exclusion scheme for online gambling. Once you register at gamstop.co.uk, you can block yourself from all UK Gambling Commission–licensed websites and apps for a minimum period of six months, one year, or five years. Registration is free and cannot be reversed until the chosen period has ended. If you feel you need a break or want to stop gambling online, GAMSTOP is the first step many people take.

BeGambleAware

BeGambleAware (begambleaware.org) provides advice, tools, and support for anyone affected by gambling. The site offers information on recognising problem gambling, setting limits, and finding help. It also signposts to the National Gambling Helpline and other specialist services. Use BeGambleAware whether you are concerned about your own gambling or someone else’s.

GamCare

GamCare (gamcare.org.uk) offers free information, advice, and counselling for people affected by problem gambling. The National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) is available 24/7. GamCare also runs treatment programmes and supports family and friends. All services are confidential.

Practical steps

Set a budget before you play and never chase losses. Do not gamble when you are upset or under the influence of alcohol. Use tools on operator sites (e.g. deposit limits, time limits, self-exclusion) and consider GAMSTOP for a full online block. You must be 18 or over to gamble in the UK.
