What is a welcome bonus?
A welcome bonus is a promotion offered by a UK-licensed casino to new customers when they sign up and, usually, when they make their first qualifying action (such as placing a first bet or staking a minimum amount). Welcome offers come in several forms: match bonuses, free spins, or a combination of both. The aim is to give you extra value when you start playing, but the terms and conditions always apply—and the most important part to understand is the wagering requirement.
Types of welcome offers
Match bonus. The operator matches a percentage of your first stake or first few stakes up to a cap. For example, “100% match up to £50” means if you stake £50, the casino adds £50 in bonus funds (subject to terms). The total you can use to play is then typically subject to wagering before you can withdraw any winnings from the bonus.
Free spins. You receive a set number of spins on selected slot games, often with no stake taken from your own balance for those spins. Winnings from free spins may be paid as bonus credit or real cash depending on the operator. If they are bonus credit, wagering usually applies to that amount before withdrawal.
Mixed offers. Some sites offer both a match bonus and free spins. For instance, a £50 match plus 50 free spins. Each part will have its own terms: wagering on the match bonus, and either wagering or no-wagering rules on free-spin winnings. Always read the specific T&Cs for each part.
What are wagering requirements?
Wagering requirements (also called playthrough or rollover) are the rules that say how many times you must bet the bonus (and sometimes the stake that triggered it) before you can withdraw any winnings generated from the bonus. They are set by the operator and must be clearly stated in the terms.
Example: you receive a £50 bonus with “30× wagering”. That usually means you must place stakes totalling 30 × £50 = £1,500 before the bonus and any winnings from it are converted to withdrawable cash. If the terms say “30× bonus + stake”, the sum is based on both the bonus and your qualifying deposit. So the same £50 bonus with a £50 deposit might require 30 × (£50 + £50) = £3,000 of stakes. Numbers vary widely—some offers have 10×, others 50× or more. Lower multiples are generally easier to complete.
What counts towards wagering?
Usually only certain games count, and often at different rates. Slots frequently count 100%; table games like blackjack or roulette may count at a lower percentage (e.g. 10%) or not at all. Some promotions exclude entire game types. Time limits also apply: you may have 7, 14, or 30 days to complete wagering before the bonus and associated winnings expire. Max bet limits during wagering are common—for example, no single bet above £5 counting—so that one large bet cannot satisfy the requirement in a few goes. Always check the promotion’s full terms on the operator’s site.
No-wagering and low-wagering offers
Some UK casinos now offer “no wagering” or “wagering-free” bonuses. In those cases, winnings from the bonus (or from free spins) are paid as real cash with no playthrough. That makes the offer simpler and often more attractive. Others offer “low wagering”, e.g. 1× or 5×, which is much easier to complete than 30× or 50×. When comparing offers, look at both the headline amount and the wagering multiple and game restrictions.
Why terms matter
Welcome offers are marketing tools. The headline (“£100 bonus” or “50 free spins”) is only part of the picture. The real value depends on how achievable the wagering is, which games you can play, and how long you have. A smaller bonus with low or no wagering can be better than a large one with very high wagering. We always recommend reading the full terms before you sign up or opt in. UKGC-licensed sites must make key terms clear and accessible.
Responsible play
Bonuses are designed to extend your play. Never chase losses or stake more than you can afford in order to clear wagering. Set a budget and stick to it. If you feel gambling is becoming a problem, use GAMSTOP to self-exclude and contact BeGambleAware or GamCare. You must be 18 or over to gamble in the UK.
